Let me take you back to a grey February week. The kind where even the rain felt exhausted. I was working on a big case – a state expropriation claim – and the stakes were high. A midnight filing deadline loomed, and the office was a battlefield of coffee-stains and chocolate wrappers. Boxes upon boxes of paper lined the grey office corridors on which grey lawyers moved in tense thought.
The intense evening hours had blurred into a frenzy of drafting, client feedback, amending, and re-amending. By midnight, the team was still glued to their screens, typing like war correspondents to create sections of the brief. Soon it was 2am but in our adrenalin haze I barely noticed.
At around 3am, I faced a choice: attempt the hour-long commute home for a blink of sleep or crash where I was? The office floor didn’t seem appealing, so I opted for something vaguely less tragic – a sweater as a pillow under my desk. Cosy, right?
At 5am, I woke up, startled. There was a woman standing over me. She shrieked. I shrieked. Turns out, she was our cleaning lady. She was not expecting to find a human body under the desk.
That was the moment I realised: this cannot be the pinnacle of legal brilliance and efficiency. Surely, we can do better. Surely, the process doesn’t have to involve lawyers becoming half-witted nocturnal mammals battling messy workflows and inefficient manual revisions. The question bothered me for years.
When language models arrived on the years later, the opportunity hit me like a lightning bolt: what if there was a way to strip out the repetitive, meaningless work and let lawyers focus on what really matters – strategy, creativity, and, dare I say it, their own well-being?
